How to Turn Paper into Money

January 14, 2016

Gift cards can cost you literally nothing. If you pay close attention to your calendar, you can maximise profit without actually giving anything away.

Gift cards have a long list of immediate benefits to you:  they cost next to nothing to print (literally nothing if use an online print-at-home option), you get the money straight away, and there’s the possibility you’ll never have to exchange it for product. But with anything that has well-known retailer benefits, there are some consumer hesitations. Expiry dates and the worry of giving an impersonal gift will have occurred to your customers already. To maximise consumer appeal and spending, you need to consult your calendar, and start thinking beyond the gift box.

Winemakers are already in touch with the seasons, and their relationship to profit. For instance, in Victoria, the grape harvesting season is between February and March. You might have already thought about using the spectacle of the harvest to your advantage, but consider this: Valentine’s Day falls early within this harvesting period. Vineyards might already enjoy healthy wine sales during this period, but the romanticism of giving a gift card is pretty low. But does that mean gift cards for Valentine’s Day are ruled out?

But what about selling an experience as a voucher? Selling a harvest-period specific voucher that gives couples access to a harvest-themed tour, a harvest-themed dinner? Especially around Valentine’s Day, when no-one wants to appear cheap, there is a great possibility of tourists spending above and beyond their gift card limits. Think, could your winery offer the experience of allowing visitors to handpick grapes themselves? What an appealing idea: having people doing labour for you, and having them pay to do it…

But don’t go thinking that using gift cards will have you labelled as a rip-off merchant: there are plenty of advantages for your customers that will feed directly into your brand loyalty. With online, print-at-home gift cards, you become the convenience king to every last-minute shopper out there. Anyone who has ever worked in retail over Christmas knows that the final few days leading up to Christmas are the absolute busiest. By running an online gift card system, you have a clear advantage over your competitors: you don’t have to close, and you give your customers an incredible stress fix. And that’s something they won’t forget. With guidance from us in this area, Montalto Vineyard and Olive Grove on the Mornington Peninsula had a huge sales hike, with buyers still spending on gifts on Christmas Day itself!
