Happy 25th Birthday, <info.cern.ch> !
It was 25 years ago today that the website was born…ok, born might be simplifying things a bit but then again, websites were pretty simple affairs back in the day. Pages upon pages of HTML text, hyperlinked to form some sort of a continuous reading experience.
Just like a modern jet plane is umpteen steps removed from a Wright brothers flying contraption, websites today are no longer just websites. They’re uber-sophisticated content aggregators that gather, display and disseminate information in just about any way information can be gathered, displayed and disseminated. Think Facebook. eBay. Youtube. We even call them something different – web platforms.
Not familiar with web platforms? We beg to differ. You know that online store you just can’t resist? Yup, that’s a web platform. Bought airline tickets online? Yup. Looked up driving directions on your browser? That’s a web platform too.
So, here’s a toast to the humble first website <http://info.cern.ch>, you made this all possible. Now, please excuse me while I reply to a comment left on our blog sent via email.
